  I ran in to something interesting with glow (lightwave 4.0 feature)

Use a black background...take and object and assign it a fractal noise for a
surface color...use glow...the glow will change with the varing color
values..neat!!!!

Try glows with your laser envelopes..works good too :)!!!! hey now..let's
use that intensity envelope on  glow...say coorespond it with the laser's
dissolve...yup that's nice too :)
